Rep. Jared Polis, Gov. Barbara Roberts and Terry Bean in Southwest Portland

POWER HOUR: It was a friend-raising, not fundraising, opportunity as Portland's political elite gathered at the SW Portland home of real estate developer Terry Bean to meet the first man to run as openly gay and get elected to the U.S. Congress: Colorado Rep. Jared Polis.

The ice cream social networking session also gave a me a chance to have Congressman Polis sign a book of poetry by his mother, Susan Polis Schutz, that my mother, Sparkie, gave me way back in 1987. The book, "To My Son With Love" included a poem entitled "Jared," about the future Congressman that talked about his understanding of world affairs, even though at the time he was a very young boy. This is one freshman Congressman to watch.
