David Weissman, Bill Foster, David Castro, Russ Gage, David, and Ryan White at QDoc Opening Night
A MOVIE FOR OUR TIMES: On Monday, at noon, Judge Michael McShane will file his ruling in Oregon's marriage equality case.
Although no one knows which way the judge will rule, it looks hopeful that Oregon is on the verge of making history—and that by next week, all of Oregon's loving, committed couples will be able to wed in our state.
Last night, as we witnessed the opening night film of the QDoc Fest at the Whitsell Auditorium, we watched what happened when California made marriage equality history.
"The Case Against 8" is an incredibly moving documentary made by filmmakers Ben Cotner and Ryan White. These gentlemen have crafted a masterful legal drama – both intimate and epic. While other films have dealt with the electoral ups and downs of the marriage battle, The Case Against 8 revealed the extraordinary legal strategies that altered the landscape for marriage equality around the country, including Oregon.
After the film, a group of guests, including the filmmakers, gathered in the Sunken Ballroom of the Portland Art Museum for QDoc's opening night party. Congrats to QDoc-ers David Weissman and Russ Gage for bringing this amazing film and festival (the only one of its kind in the entire world) to Portland.
